The rushing sensation of butterflies in one’s stomach is a feeling every athlete is familiar with. Athletes are often told that it’s adrenaline that causes that butterfly sensation. It’s was often believed that adrenaline alone helped us athletes increase our athletic performance. The current belief is that adrenaline causes athletes to believe that all they have to do is get pumped up in order to better their athletic performance. Contrary to this widely-held belief, the utility of adrenaline can only come about by implementing stressors during practice, so an athlete can harness all the benefits of adrenaline. If we fail to recognize that harnessing adrenaline requires training, then sports will become less entertaining. This will occur because the game will essentially stay at the same level of play. Due to this, people will watch sports less and cause big businesses, whose main way to market is through commercials during sporting events, to suffer. Nowadays we have learned that combining both mental toughness and mindfulness together allows athletes to harness the full power of adrenaline in order to increase their athletic performance. In this sense, adrenaline can essentially be used as a tool by college football athletes who receive the proper training. Through combining mental toughness and mindfulness athletes are afforded the capacity to harness the full power of adrenaline, benefiting their athletic performance. Essentially, adrenaline can be utilized as a tool to facilitate athleticism when accompanied with proper training.
